Where a Nigerian passport takes you without a visa

A Nigerian 🇳🇬 passport gets you into 42 countries without arranging a visa beforehand. 26 are visa-free on arrival with no process at all, and 16 issue a visa when you land.

A further 44 countries accept an eVisa, and one operates an electronic travel authorisation. For the remaining 111 destinations you need a visa granted before you travel. The 26 countries with no visa at all

The pattern is regional. 14 of the 26 are members of ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, where free movement is a treaty right rather than a courtesy. West African travel is the one part of the world a Nigerian passport moves through easily. Rwanda 🇷🇼 and Seychelles 🇸🇨 are the notable additions outside that bloc, both having opened to all African passports as policy.

The West African column is a 1979 treaty, not a courtesy

Fourteen of those 26 are ECOWAS member states. The reason is a document signed in Dakar, Senegal 🇸🇳 on 29 May 1979: Protocol A/P.1/5/79 Relating to Free Movement of Persons, Residence and Establishment. It entered into force in 1984.

The protocol set out three phases, each meant to take five years. Phase one abolished visas for visits of up to 90 days. Phase two established the right of residence. Phase three established the right to set up a business and work in another member state.

Phase one was fully implemented, which is the column you are reading. Phase two followed, through ECOWAS residence cards. Phase three, the right of establishment, is still under implementation in most member states. That is 47 years after signature, and more than three decades past the fifteen-year transition the treaty allowed itself.

So a Nigerian 🇳🇬 passport holder can enter Ghana 🇬🇭 or Senegal 🇸🇳 tomorrow without asking anyone. Opening a business there on the same legal footing as a citizen is the part that was promised in 1979 and has not fully arrived.

The 16 countries that issue a visa on arrival

Visa on arrival is not the same as visa-free. You will normally need a return ticket, proof of accommodation, and the fee in cash, and the officer at the desk can still refuse entry. Check the current requirement with the embassy before flying, because these lists change with little notice.

The 44 eVisa countries are the useful middle

An eVisa is applied for online and usually approved in days rather than weeks, without surrendering your passport to an embassy. For a Nigerian 🇳🇬 passport this covers a meaningful set of destinations:

How the Nigerian passport compares

Against the 70 African and Caribbean passports in the dataset, Nigeria 🇳🇬 ranks 65th on visa-free and visa-on-arrival access combined. Only five rank lower.

The top of that table is almost entirely Caribbean. Barbados 🇧🇧 leads with 137 destinations, followed by the Bahamas 🇧🇸 at 134, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 🇻🇨 at 132, and Saint Kitts and Nevis 🇰🇳 at 130. Seychelles 🇸🇨 is the strongest African passport at 130, then Mauritius 🇲🇺 at 122.

The pattern is not about wealth or population. Small island states have spent decades negotiating reciprocal arrangements, and Commonwealth membership carries real access. Nigeria's 42 is a policy outcome rather than an inevitability.

Every major destination requires a visa in advance

The 111 visa-required destinations include the ones most Nigerians actually want to travel to. The United Kingdom 🇬🇧, the United States 🇺🇸, France 🇫🇷, Germany 🇩🇪, Canada 🇨🇦, China 🇨🇳, India 🇮🇳, Brazil 🇧🇷 and Japan 🇯🇵 all require a visa arranged before departure.

So the practical experience of holding a Nigerian passport is not captured by the headline number. 42 destinations of open access is one thing. It is another when the business trip, the graduation, the conference and the family visit all sit in the other column. Each of those carries an application fee, a biometrics appointment and a wait measured in weeks.

Why the number is lower than it should be

111 destinations still require a visa arranged in advance, which is more than half the world. The cost of that lands unevenly: application fees, courier charges, biometrics appointments in another city, and weeks of waiting with your passport held by a consulate.

Intra-African travel is the sharpest version of the problem. A Nigerian passport holder still needs a visa or an eVisa for most of the continent. That is why the African Union's free movement protocol matters. It is also why Rwanda 🇷🇼, Seychelles 🇸🇨, Gambia 🇬🇲 and Benin 🇧🇯 opening to all African passports counts for more than it might appear to.

Why this is a diaspora question, not just a travel one

Nigeria 🇳🇬 received $21.29bn in remittances in 2024, second on the continent and 8.44% of GDP, according to our money sent home dataset. That money moves because people moved, and the people sending it hold the passport described above.

Visa friction is the tax on that relationship. A funeral you cannot reach in time, a graduation missed because biometrics were booked for the following month, a parent who cannot visit for the birth of a grandchild. None of it appears in a passport ranking, and all of it is the reason the ranking matters.

Practical notes

• · Visa-free almost always means tourism, and periods vary from 14 to 90 days. Work or study needs a different permit.
• · Many destinations require six months of passport validity remaining and at least two blank pages.
• · A yellow fever certificate is required for entry to several countries on these lists, and is checked.
• · Transit through a third country can require a transit visa even when your destination does not.

Rules change often and without much warning. Confirm with the destination's embassy or immigration service before booking, and treat any list, including this one, as a starting point rather than an authority.
